Central and conveniently located near the Palazzo dei Congressi and Palazzo degli Affari, as well as a short walk from the Duomo, Santa Maria Novella, and San Lorenzo, the Hotel Atlantic Palace is also one of the easiest to reach of Florence's 4 star hotels from the Santa Maria Novella Train Station and from the shuttle terminal for the Florence Amerigo Vespucci Airport (only five minutes on foot).
Just a few steps from the hotel, 50 meters away in Via Faenza, you will find a masterpiece of the early Florentine Renaissance, the Cenacolo di Fuligno, a splendid fresco of the Last Supper by Perugino. Meanwhile, only five minutes away, the famous covered Market of Piazza San Lorenzo remains to this day one of the authentic corners of Florence. In this beautiful Art-Nouveau structure of iron and glass, among the colorful fruit and vegetable stands, you will also find many typically Florentine and Tuscan products, such as "finocchiona", Tuscan bread, Marrone del Mugello PGI chestnuts, Certaldo onions, Empoli artichokes, Florentine saffron, and truffles, just to name a few.
A little further on your walk is the Basilica di San Lorenzo, once the parish church of the Medici family. Its patrons embellished the building over the centuries, commissioning the greatest artists of the Florentine Renaissance, including Brunelleschi and Donatello. Michelangelo's Sacrestia Nuova (New Sacristy) holding the Chapel of the Princes is a powerful and poetic synthesis of architecture and sculpture.
Exiting the Basilica, on your left hand side is the magnificent Palazzo Medici Riccardi. Within is Benozzo Gozzoli's enchanting fresco of the Three Wise Men, as well as an exhibition space for important temporary shows. From there you can walk down Via de' Martelli which ends on the splendid Piazza del Duomo with the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Fiore, Giotto's Campanile, and the Baptistery of St. John. A riot of colored marble envelops the buildings, which are dominated by Brunelleschi's huge and unmistakable red dome.
Take a break in one of the historic cafés (such as Gilli or Paszkowski) in Piazza della Repubblica, then it's time to go shopping along Via de' Calzaiuoli and Via de' Tornabuoni, the chicest streets in Florence, with store windows and show rooms featuring famous Italian and international designers (Ferragamo, Gucci, Prada, Cartier, Dior, Cavalli, etc.). Before you head back to Hotel Atlantic Palace, be sure to visit the Chiesa di Santa Maria Novella. Here also, a two-toned marble scheme elaborates the facade with masterful balance, the work of another great Florentine of the Renaissance, Leon Battista Alberti.
The Hotel Atlantic Palace is the perfect solution for guests who come to Florence on business. Palazzo degli Affari and Palazzo dei Congressi, important venues for international medical conferences and other high level events, are within 5 minutes' walking distance. Fortezza da Basso, the site of many fairs and Events & Tours such as Pitti Uomo, the famous men's fashion trade show, Pitti Bimbo and Pitti Filati, which, every year, attract thousands of visitors to Florence from all over the world, is just a 10-minute walk away.
